Controls Engineer

The Controls Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, managing and/or maintaining controls software for production machines and processes specific to customer requirements. Ensure that these systems and processes operate effectively, efficiently and safely. Use thorough understanding of the operational processes of an organization in this truly multidisciplinary role.
 
Responsibility and Authority
  • Develops, evaluates, and improves manufacturing methods.
  • Evaluate current manufacturing systems to determine areas for improvement and recommend implementation schedule.
  • Maintain current knowledge of Lean Manufacturing methodologies, prepare capital request, cost justifications to support recommendations. 
  • Prioritize and implement schedules for assigned projects using appropriate planning methods and facilitate project implementation.
  • Confers with vendors to determine product specifications and arrange for purchase of equipment, materials, or parts, and evaluates products according to specifications and quality standards.
  • Confers with management, engineering, and other staff regarding manufacturing capabilities, production schedules, and other considerations to facilitate production processes.
  • Provide development and support for process control standards and new technologies
  • Develop standards documentation and SOP's as needed
  • Diagnose cause of electrical or mechanical malfunction or failure of operational equipment and will teach/train electricians and technicians to perform preventative and corrective maintenance
  • Tests and inspects equipment to eliminate production problems
  • Provides production equipment support utilizing knowledge and understanding of the equipment control systems, programming, processes and components being utilized
  • Diagnoses and resolves production equipment issues where control system components and/or programming may be a contributing factor
  • Maintains electrical and control system schematics and programming documentation such as to ensure that all electronic and hard copy versions are at current revision
  • Maintains all plant floor and library copies of all control system schematics, documentation, process and motion controller programs, PLC and HMI programs and all other such equipment control related files and documentation
  • Assist Electrical Technicians with the timely maintenance and repair of PLC, HMI, Process and Motion Control and all other control system and automation control hardware
  • Planning/Preparation/Implementation/Safety
  • Participates in the planning, engineering, and implementation phases of new equipment installation projects
  • Participates and may be directly responsible for the planning, engineering and implementation of equipment modification projects
  • Assists with development and implementation of standards for electrical and control components for
use within the facility and with suppliers
  • Maintains maximum personal knowledge on all relevant controls related hardware and software
 
Qualifications and Experience Requirements:
 
Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Controls or related field from a four-year college or university or Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering Technology, automation or manufacturing or related field.  Experience with:

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
 
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.  Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
 
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
 
COMPUTER SKILLS 
Required knowledge of MS Excel and MS Word using MS Windows platform.  MS PowerPoint and MS Access experience a plus.
